Skaaz

I added several weeks ago a character in the right menu of the blog French version. It is called a Skaaz. It is not hard to explain the concept, however it is much harder to define why to use it. A colleague has even told me: Are you raising a tamagotchi?

This Skaaz is kind of an avatar as it should represent someone. In this case, this Quetzal should talk like me. He should answer back instead of me in MSN or on my website. I guess Skaaz website tries to imitate Cyworld which I have mentioned in an article.

I have tested this feature as it is from a company working on language research. VirtuOz's technology is used by organizations like Neuf Cegetel for its after sale FQA, SNCF on its travel agency website...

You can test it if you want and this will also enable me to train him better in English (as new combinations will enrich his knowledge).

EU in YouTube

The European Union has launched its own YouTube channel. This way, it will be able to promote some of its actions through short movies. I personnally think it is a good initiative because some European citizens feel the European Union is a lot of bureaucracy and nothing concrete. However, what will be the real impact of this:

  • who knows that this account exists in YouTube?
  • what is the ratio of persons watching movies through YouTube on the Internet vs watching TV programs?

I guess it is cheaper to broadcast these films this way.

Here are the movies I have chosen to illustrate this post.

Dealing with AIDS

One of a film series promoting EU financial aids towards producers

About research programs

There are more videos on other topics like roaming, global warming... Check them out here.

YouTube awards

Movie sharing website YouTube, bought by Google, organized for the first time (as far as I know) a contest. None of the movies I prefer won but, some of them still are worth to watch.

Category Most Inspirational: campaign for free hugs (and I guess peace in the World).

Category Most Adorable: an animation about a Kiwi (disappeared bird species unable to fly).

An outlook to future technologies

I saw this movie thanks to the very good InternetActu website. It was made by a British incubator, Cenamps. Innovations presented are not revolutionnary for those of you who follow the high tech news. However, in my opinion they are described simply.

Do not hesitate to leave comments on this topic.

New FONspot in Lyon

Almost two weeks ago, I have received my Fonera from FON. What is FON? Well, I think you can already go to this website to read about it.

FON_Renan What have I done with this Fonera? Well, it has became a Wifi hotspot. If you come along to Lyon to visit me, you will be able to reach it (its name is FON_RENAN). My neighbor noticed it right away because her computer suddenly connected to my Access Point. She ran to my door asking to me what had I done. I am sure my explanations were confusing. I promise I will write this article about it soon, but I am quite busy now.

FON is not an open system, but if you are already a Fonero, you can connect for free. Here is a link for a map of the FON hotspots.

I am now waiting for Neuf to complete its agreement so that I will have two hotspots: one in Lyon (Neuf) and the other one in Grenoble (Free + Fonera).

Do not hesitate to leave comments if you have some questions.

Connected through Optical Fiber

Today Free, a French operator announced that they will provide FTTH (Fiber To The Home) to Paris starting 2007. This service will be available for other cities later on. As Lyon is a major city, it will be probably connected soon.

What is this Fiber To The Home? This means that your home is connected by optical fiber to your operator. By doing this, you reach ultra high speed for Internet. Free announces 50 Mbs at 29,90 euros per month! Free is not the first operator providing FTTH in Paris, but it will be at this cheap price.

This high speed will bring the development of new services. In Lyon, I have 20 Mbs with Neuf and I already have Internet, TV, and VoIP phone. I think we will approache speeds available in Japan and in Korea! 50 Mbs are probably a start...

Flock, a Web browser to try out...

Today, I wanted to talk about Flock (said to be a Web 2.0 browser). When reading the dotclear forum, I realized that this blog was recognized as a Movable Type API one. But what about Flock then?
